Covid-19 Has Devastated The Food Service Industry
The Covid 19 Pandemic has been hard on us all. Jobs are gone, relationships put on hold, social interaction seems like it may never be the same and lives have been lost. Among the hardest hit financially are the restaurants, especially locally owned restaurants. Small locally owned restaurants aren't designed to be able to withstand the kind of interruption in cash flow that the novel coronavirus is causing. Some are still doing take out and deliveries, but even those are hurting. In many cases curb side pickup and deliveries only help them to lose less after paying the bills that don't stop for Covid-19.
The New Normal Will Include Less Locally Owned Restaurants
Those of us who were in Tuscaloosa during the EF4 multiple-vortex tornado that destroyed parts of Tuscaloosa remember that there used to be more locally owned drugstores than the very few exceptions that still remain. They just didn't come back after the tornado and now the pharmacy market is dominated by chain pharmacies. Events of this magnitude can clearly create a new normal. Jim Cramer of “Mad Money” fame said, “If we come out of this later, there are going to be three retailers in this country, There’s going to be Amazon. There’s going to be Walmart. And there’s going to be Costco.” His statement may be an exaggeration, but it is an exaggeration of a real situation. Many businesses will not come back.
You Can Help Decide What Restaurants Make It
Tuscaloosa, Alabama has an amazing variety of locally owned restaurants! From BBQ to fine dining to burgers and shakes to good old southern comfort food; Tuscaloosa has a wonderful assortment of home grown flavors. These cannot be duplicated by a franchise. They are often imitated, but never duplicated. Nothing against any franchise restaurants. Those are great to have around too, but the local treasures must be protected. Would anyone really want to be able to just go to any town and have practically the same food choices as the last town they were in? Of course not! That's why it is more important than ever that we support our local businesses. Without your help, many of them will not survive. It's time to show them you appreciate them. All you have to do is order and enjoy some great food from some of your favorite restaurants. It's a win/win situation if you are ready to take action.
